yes, happy new year.

eight treasure rice....its a kind of special holiday fried rice. The special ingredients are for good luck, prosperity, etc in the new year--I lost my recipe which explains what each one is (and I have switched some out).
I use salmon roe (any fish roe can be used) for prosperity
bamboo shoots for strength (or growth, dont quite remember),
something red--good luck in asia (I use the salmon roe for that one)
you are supposed to use a fish (cant remember why), mushrooms (cant use these--allergies),
and in the end you have 8 special ingredients for your rice.
You can make regular fried rice and then put it into a mold (like for jello), plate it up and then put the special ingredients on the top--the salmon roe on the very top, surrounded by cucumber (or mushrooms or bamboo shoots), then divide the areas down the side into sections with whatever you used on the top...and place the other special ingredients in the areas.
it is for good luck and fortune in the new year. (really need to find the recipe again for the meanings behind each ingredient

you get a silver star for that (hubby made brownies from scratch--that were actually edible /faint--he gets the platinum star).

rice turned out pretty good had some lobster with it as well (not much of a fan of lobster, but it was a special occasion).

so hows the snow piling up down there pwnd? (we got socked pretty good already)

I'll take a silver star! The only thing I can really make is waffles and frozen pizza. But I can grill lots of things.

We got a little over an inch. Not too bad. I wouldn't have minded another inch or so since I don't have work until Monday.

we got a few here, sis says she got like a foot (wonder how unlucky did since he lives in indiana)...and now its going to be below zero! (I'll take that spouse and blankee and mug of hot chocolate and a nice trip to a warm place right now).

perhaps the mrs can teach you a few things about cooking (really, its not THAT hard)....then again I think its in my veins since my moms dad was a baker...though my sister didnt get any of those genes (she was very much like you, pwnd--if it couldnt be boiled in the bag or micro'd she couldnt make it...she has improved --or so she says, her sig other is still alive with no trips to the er!--so perhaps she has)

Yup definitely cold here as well. We have had a windchill advisory since yesterday. Cold cold cold.

I can cook some things, I just don't like to cook. I am the one who then cleans up after dinner so she doesn't have too.

yep, highs for the next few days are expected to be...lower than zero

and another round of snow ....dont know who pisssed off the snowman door decoration, but we sure are getting plenty of winter now!

my plans for the next few days are to sit and watch the snowplows pass our street by and drink lots of hot chocolate.

hubby and I trade off on dinner duty....though I had much of the last week, we usually help each other out like he cuts veggies and I usually take care of all meats/poultry/fish and if he has a recipe that doesnt make sense to him I usually help out there too.

dont know if you will be going to school tomorrow pwnd...looks like you are getting some pretty dang snowy and cold weather in your area...and Perkunas too! (glad I am on the just bitttttttterly cold side of things now...send more hot cocoa!)

We just got about a foot of snow and it is drifting. Oh and it is sub-zero out. So ya. Very cold. Looks like we are supposed to get more snow on Thursday as well. Isn't supposed to get above freezing for this week though.

No school for me tomorrow. Was supposed to be teacher's institute tomorrow, so no students, but we were supposed to be there. Hopefully they reschedule it for later and don't push it back to Tuesday forcing the students to have to come an extra day (or rather on a Friday that is in place of our "spring break").

we would be MORE than happy to pack it up and ship it to you (we got 9+ inches, sis says she has more than 12 inches--her poor little dog has to have a path shoveled for him to go out!)...below zero here....started both of my cars up last night--and they did, so that is a good sign, will start them up again today just to make sure, but no other plans to leave my warm-ish abode!

stay warm all you folks out there--those windchills are VERY dangerous!!

Way below zero here. -10 with a windchill of around -40. Nope. Do need to go outside later to shovel my car and my wife's car out so that I can leave for work tomorrow... That should be interesting. Definitely going to be dressed in a lot of clothes to do it.

do them one at a time---you shouldnt be out for more than 15min with that kind of windchill! (ours is worse, -15 right now with the windchill -45...nope, no plans to leave my computer!!)

Ya I might have too. Went to the hall to get the mail, was out, in the hall, for all of a minute and was just about frozen! It currently is -10 and it feels like -33. Woohoo.

So update, because I'm pretty pissed, I just spent probably 30 minutes outside clearing behind both cars. Why? Because my school district determined that since it is far to dangerous out for students to come to school tomorrow that we should instead have all the TEACHERS come IN for meetings. All day. Because why not? I mean seriously, our top priority is making sure students are safe. So lets give them the day off again tomorrow to keep them safe. Teachers safe? Psh, they are adults, they can make it here. Even if it means a normal 30 minute drive turns into an hour because the conditions are awful. Or the car doesn't start because it is too cold out. But we are adults, so we can totally handle it...

These 0 to 1 inch events can move along. 4 of them and close to a foot and a half of snow so far. Very cold and painful, shoveling and sweeping snow at 4:00 a.m. The below zero temps are starting to cause some problems too. More snow expected Weds., Thurs., with no amount forecasted yet. But the daytime highs are suppose to reach the 40's for 3 or 4 days. We will see.

yep, our car outside did not start either (one in the garage did...perhaps we can roll the dead one out into the street and start it with the other.....we shall see).

yeah, it is always a wonder that businesses (that includes school districts---can tell you stories about the one I worked for in japan---) never think about ALL of the people they deal with--not just the kids, but the parents and the employees who also need to get to the school....I guess kids are just soo much more important than the rest of the population.
sorry you have to try to get into work tomorrow pwnd, hubby will be working at home again seeing as we have a dead car (could just be frozen lines, but either way until it gets a wee bit warmer, it aint goin' nowheres).

I think most of our administration lives in town. So they have a 5 minute drive into school. Therefore they figure, well heck it isn't bad at all. If I can do it so can they! Forgetting that some of us live 30-45 minutes away. But we are keep the kids safe by golly! >.>

Cold again. It is currently -11 out and it feels like -25. Guess that is a step up from -15 and -40 from yesterday?

yep, you are a non-person and live in the wrong place pwnd (welcome to the rest of the world).

in other news: yes, the cold winter car refused to start, the warm weather car (hiding out in the garage) started with no issues...so...we rolled the dead one down the driveway (one of the few times I am happy to have a driveway with a hill), and backed the other one out....good thing our neighbors were gone since we didnt get the dead one quite out into the street...but we got the dead one jumped and since we had them both out ---the warm weather car had no gas left in it (really I had planned to go to the gas station all last week...but drove the other car the whole time)....so now both cars start, both have gas, but the warm weather car is...not in the garage (she really doesnt like cold weather)....so for the final act...we move the cars yet again, backing the warm one into the garage incase the cold one decides not to start yet again.

used to do things like this back when I was a kid and we had 6 drivers and 5-7 cars and the car in the garage wanted to get out....we called it 'musical cars'...ah the memories-------

and its still blastedly COLD outside!!!!!!!!

Ummm what should you be out AT ALL? Is there life at those temps?
